COMC

What it is:

The Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (COMC) is a national mathematics competition organized by the Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS). It is a 2.5-hour written exam that includes both multiple-choice and written-response questions. The problems range from accessible to highly challenging, testing creativity and mathematical reasoning.

Participants:

The COMC is open to all secondary school students in Canada and Canadian students abroad. It serves as the first step in the selection process for Canada’s international math teams, including the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).

History:

First introduced in 1996 by the CMS, it is now Canada’s largest national math contest, written by thousands of students each year. Top performers qualify for advanced contests such as the Canadian Mathematical Olympiad (CMO) and the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) team selection.
